Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council

The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council (DEI Council) at Mount Mary University seeks to foster an academic community and campus climate that provides education to transform the world. This takes place through embracing the values of MMU with an emphasis on open-mindedness, respect, cultural awareness and sensitivity, equity, and inclusion.

The DEI Council is comprised of faculty members, administrative staff, support staff, and students. Council members are appointed by the President.

Council meetings are open to any member of the Mount Mary Community who is interested in contributing to this work. Mission

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council at Mount Mary University seeks to foster an academic community and campus climate that provides education to transform the world. This takes place through embracing the values of MMU with an emphasis on open-mindedness, respect, cultural awareness and sensitivity, equity, and inclusion.

Goals

The DEI Council serves the university community by promoting inclusiveness and equity throughout all aspects of campus life through the following goals:

  • Serve as the premier resource, liaison, and representative for the university to align our resources, actions, practices and policies with best practices for diversity and inclusion.
  • Foster a proactive, culturally conscious campus climate that promotes unity, respect, social justice and inclusion in an ever-changing academic community.
  • To promote the university as a beacon for recruiting and retaining students from all cultures, while promoting the university's core values through an equitable academic environment. To support the university in recruiting and retaining faculty, staff, and administrators from diverse backgrounds to promote a culture that is congruent and representative of our campus community.

Subcommittees

The DEI Council is divided into four subcommittees, allowing for greater impact in specific areas. Learn more about our Subcommittees and current initiatives.

Student Support

In collaboration with the Admissions Office, Student Government Association and other student organizations, the Student Support Committee works to develop best practices for recruiting and supporting diverse students from the front door to graduation.

Campus Climate

The Campus Climate Committee currently oversees the administration of a campus climate survey to all students, faculty and staff focused on diversity, equity and inclusion perceptions, as well as developing an online reporting system for instances of hate, bias, discrimination and harassment. The goal of the Committee is create a campus environment that is welcoming and equitable for the entire Mount Mary community.

Visibility

The Visibility Committee ensures that the DEI council is recognized on campus as a resource, connector and partner to the Mount Mary campus community and beyond. The Visibility Committee is responsible for enhancing the Council's online and campus presence with updated web content, resources and program information.

All Things HR

This Committee partners closely with the Human Resources department to implement diverse hiring practices such as forming search committees, minimizing bias, developing resources on posting attractive job announcements to increase diverse candidate pools and connect with diverse professional organizations. Additionally, this committee will work with HR to offer trainings and learning opportunities for faculty and staff.
