Teaching Excellence Awardee to speak at Commencement

Julie Tatlock, assistant professor of history, will present the commencement address at the winter commencement on Saturday, Dec. 15.

Tatlock, who currently serves as interim chair of the department of Justice, History and Sociology, received the 2018-19 Teaching Excellence Award for Mount Mary earlier in the semester.

Tatlock joined the faculty of Mount Mary in 2010. She earned her Ph.D. from Marquette University in 2008, specializing in Early Modern & Modern Europe.

The Excellence in Teaching award is presented to those recognized for creative teaching, up-to-date knowledge in their field, and an honest interest in building their students, both morally and intellectually.

One nominator wrote, “As a chemistry major, she makes me love attending my history class. She is so enthusiastic about history and talks about it with so much joy. I pay attention to every minute of class.”

Tatlock said her students motivate her as a teacher. “They inspire me every day with their ability to persevere and overcome obstacles,” she said “My time in the classroom is always the highlight of my day and I am so blessed to be able teach the discipline I love in such a wonderful environment.”

Outside of teaching, Julie is also a part of Phi Alpha Theta (the History Honor Society) and the American Historical Association.
