Summer Leadership Academy opens doors
Academy offers leadership, college and career sessions for high school girls
Over 60 high school girls from a four-state area and one international student will participate in Mount Mary’s expanded Summer Leadership Academy, held June 19-24, 2022.
This summer program returns to the original, residence-based experience and includes six days and five nights on campus. The program includes leadership development, college prep and career exploration programming in arts and design; humanities and business; and STEM.
Leadership and college preparedness topics for the program include:
- Leadership for Social Justice
- Finding Your Authentic Self
- Confidence and the Importance of Sisterhood
- Introduction to Financial Aid
- Finding the Right Fit in a College
- Networking with Young Professionals
Upon completion of the program, participants are awarded two college credits at Mount Mary.
In addition to the 61 program attendees, 15 peer mentors will be on campus to assist with the program. Peer mentors are young women who have previously attended a Summer Leadership Academy and return to the program to lead small group discussions and assist first-year participants.
Past participants have left the experience with deepened confidence and resilience, stronger networking skills and a greater ability to engage with and advocate for others from diverse backgrounds.
“The Summer Leadership Academy was right up my alley,” said 2021 participant Eva Billeb, who recently completed her sophomore year at Hartford Union High School in Hartford, Wis. “I loved every minute of it and honestly it really made me feel closer to becoming someone who will be able to make those important decisions as to what I want to do.”
