Tips for Support
- Encourage your student to be involved in the Mount Mary community. Involvement in extracurricular activities and study groups helps your student develop leadership skills and helps with career preparation that will be key to success. Encourage them to get involved.
- Remember that your student is pulled in many different directions—they will face new opportunities - and challenges - as a student. A little patience and understanding can go a long way!
- Help them find resources to support success. Many of these resources, like individual counseling, career preparation, and tutoring, are outlined below. Reminder your student that it is okay to ask for help.
- Respect study time. College requires a lot of work - know that studying is key and most students need to study for two hours a week PER hour they are in class. If they are in classes 10 hours a week, they will likely need 20 hours outside of the classroom to be successful! Help figure out a schedule that works for them, especially for students living at home with family.

Events
We are happy to invite families and supporters of students to a number of events through a student's time at Mount Mary. Some of those events include...
New Student Registration (NSR): The first official event deposited students. At NSR, students will register for their classes after meeting with an academic advisor, finalize any outstanding paperwork, get information on Mount Mary’s Core curriculum, and accomplish several other tasks. For a current list of dates, or to sign up for a New Student Registration Day, admitted students can visit their Admissions Portal. At NSR, there are specific sessions for families to engage with resources and ask questions as well!
Orientation: All new students are required to attend the New Student Orientation program, and though families are not permitted to attend NSO, they are welcome to attend Investiture and the welcome BBQ on the first-day of New Student Orientation. Orientation is scheduled at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters and is designed to be a comprehensive introduction to Mount Mary. The orientation program is also a opportunity for new students to meet and get to know one another, get to know the campus, and find out about exciting student opportunities outside of the classroom. For more information, including the date of the upcoming New Student Orientation, contact an Admission Counselor or the Office of Student Engagement. Your student will also be sent in depth information to their xxxxx@mtmary.edu email in the months leading up to their start at Mount Mary.
Investiture: All new students and their families are invited to participate in the time honored Mount Mary tradition, the Investiture ceremony. In the ceremony, students are asked to "invest" their time, talent, and energy into Mount Mary, and the community commits their investment into them. New students are introduced to the Mount Mary community and provided with the “Light of Learning” that will carry them through their time at Mount Mary. For more information, contact the Office of Student Engagement and make sure students and checking their email.

Light of Learning Ceremony: Dating back to the beginning of Mount Mary’s history, though called by different names over its 100 year history, is the Light of Learning ceremony. Held the night before each Commencement, this ceremony features a passing of the “light of learning” lantern, as well as singing, poetry reading, and a celebration of the accomplishments of the graduating students. In Spring, the Student Leadership and Service awards are presented. Family and loved ones are invited to enjoy this ceremony. For more information, contact the Mission and Justice office.
Commencement ceremonies are held at the end of both Fall and Spring semesters. All graduating students are invited to participate in these events and should consult the Mount Mary Commencement page for important information about tickets, graduation fees, and more.
